Canton sends six wrestlers, Troy advances two to Regionals next week
WILLIAMSPORT — The local area saw six Canton wrestlers and two Troy wrestlers advance to regionals next weekend after the District wrestling tournament over the weekend.
For Canton, Mason Nelson (285) took second, while Lyle Vermilya (107) came in fourth. Cohen Landis (121), Hudson Ward (152), and Michael Davis (215) all finished fifth, while Riley Parker (172) took sixth.
For Troy, Mason Woodward (215) took fourth with Konner Kerr (114) coming in sixth. Kenyon Slater (133) came up just short of a spot, taking eighth.
Canton’s Parker could have wrestled for a higher seed but shut himself down after guaranteeing his spot in regionals.
Nelson went through the gauntlet to get his podium spot. He grinded out a 3-2 win over Benton’s Andrew Wolfe in the semifinals, before falling to Mifflinburg’s Emmanuel Ulrich by fall in 53 seconds in the final.
Troy’s Woodward will be heading to the regional tournament for the first time.
He got two falls on Friday to get to the semifinals.
Woodward lost in the semifinals to the top ranked wrestler in the state, Muncy’s Austin Johnson, by fall in 1:24, but then he came back to beat Canton’s Michael Davis in the consolation semifinals by fall in 2:45.
In the third place match he lost to Mt. Carmel’s Ryan Weidner 6-3. Woodward was down 6-1 early in the third but got a reversal as Weidner ran out of gas. From there he tried a power half, and just as Weidner started to go time ran out.
