Canton punches ticket to District semis

CANTON — Canton pulled away late to beat Montgomery, 7-2, during District IV, Class AA quarterfinal playoff action Saturday.

The top four in the Warrior line-up went 7-for-14 on the day, led by Hudson Ward’s 3-for-4 performance with 4-RBI, and a run scored.

Weston Bellows (2-for-3) scored a run, and drove one in, as Hayden Ward (2-for-4) had a triple with an RBI, and two runs scored. Holden Ward (1-for-3) scored twice.

Zack Colton (1-for-1) had a double with a run scored, as Michael Beers (1-for-3) drove in a run.

Hayden Ward got the win, going the first four innings to striking out three with three hits, three walks, and two earned runs.

Holden Ward pitched the final three innings with four strikeouts, three walks, and one hit.

After Montgomery got two runs in the top of the first Canton came back with three in the bottom half.

Holden Ward would reach on an error, then scored on a Hayden Ward triple. Hudson Ward brought home Hayden Ward with a hit, then, after back to back walks, Beers singled in Hudson Ward to put the Warriors up 3-2.

The game stayed like that until the bottom of the fifth, when Bellows led off with a hit. He then stole second, setting up Hudson Ward’s RBI single for a 4-2 lead.

Canton then broke the game open in the sixth with three runs. Colton had a 2-out double to get the rally started. After a walk to Holden Ward Hayden Ward reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases.

Bellows would bring in Colton with a sacrifice fly for a 3-run lead. Hudson Ward then brought in Holden Ward and Hayden Ward with a 2-out, 2-run single for the 7-2 final.

Canton will now take on Wyalusing in the semifinals next Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. over at Mansfield University.
