Canton Defense Holds Off Wellsboro in Hall of Fame Game
The Canton Warriors defeated the Wellsboro Hornets 14-6 on Saturday, September 19, during Canton’s 2026 Hall of Fame game.
Wellsboro struck first on its opening drive. Facing fourth-and-six just inside Warrior territory, quarterback Derrick Blasz dropped back and connected with Max Mascho over the middle for a touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, giving the Hornets an early 6-0 lead.
Canton looked to answer on its next possession, driving deep into Wellsboro territory. However, the Hornets’ defense held strong and prevented the Warriors from finding the end zone.
The Warriors eventually got their opportunity in the second quarter following a Wellsboro turnover on downs. On the ensuing possession, the Hornets attempted to run up the middle, but the ball came loose and Canton recovered.
With a fresh set of downs, Canton capitalized. Quarterback Owen Moore kept the ball and rolled around the outside, coming up just inches short of the goal line. On the following play, Moore finished the drive with a quarterback keeper up the middle for the touchdown.
Aiden Dowling converted the extra point, giving the Warriors a 7-6 lead.
Neither team was able to break through again before halftime. Wellsboro’s defense stopped a deep Canton pass just before the buzzer to keep the game within one score.
During halftime, the Canton Area School District recognized four new inductees into its Sports Hall of Fame: Jeff Sechrist, Jess Millard, Rob Bardo, and Reese Holmes.
Canton extended its lead on its opening drive of the second half. After the Warriors’ possession stalled just inside Hornet territory, Canton faced fourth-and-five. Moore scrambled out of the pocket, avoided the pressure and found Bailey Gardner downfield. Gardner broke several tackles on his way to the end zone for a touchdown.
The extra point was good, giving Canton a 14-6 advantage.
Both defenses took control for the remainder of the game. Wellsboro made one final attempt to mount a comeback with a Hail Mary as time expired, but the Canton secondary knocked the pass away to secure the 14-6 victory.
Both teams return to action this Friday. Wellsboro will host Troy, while Canton travels to face South Williamsport.
