Can God help us every day?
“I got this,” is a common phrase many of us say. It implies that we can get this or that done without any help from others. Truth be told, most of us need help, some of us are willing to admit it. The law of God, revealed in such forms as the Ten Commandments, tells us what we need to do.
Yet, all of us struggle to follow these things. If God gave a nation – ancient Israel – all the instructions and material prosperity they needed to strive, why did they fail? Why do we sometimes fail, morally and ethically? We are helpless to overcome our sinful nature. Christ died to kill that nature, but we still need help to overcome our sinful tendencies. The Devil might be drowned, but the bugger can still swim, as one theologian put it.
The Holy Spirit is given to every believer to help him or her live in the ways of Christ. The Apostle said, “…if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you (Rom 8:10-11).”
