Boat Regatta Launches Swimmingly
On Friday, May 31, Rock L. Butler Middle School held their first Cardboard Boat Regatta event. All of the students created boats (that can seat up to two children), strictly out of cardboard and duct tape with the intent of racing them in Packer Pool.
The day began with a procession of the classes and their boats from Rock L. Butler Middle School down to The Green in Wellsboro. Students from Don Gill and Charlotte Lappla Elementary Schools were also present on The Green to cheer for the “big kids.” From there, the students made their way to Packer Park where they participated in a variety of field activities, including tug-of-war, noodle javelin throw, car wash relay, and more.
“[We] were approached to come up with an activity that would involve the entire school,” said Art Teacher and Co-Organizer Heather Ladd. “We don’t do small, so we ended up with a boat regatta.”
“Around two weeks to a month…we’ve been doing a lot of hard work for this,” said sixth grade student, Gabriel Carpenter in response his team’s preparation.
The fleet of boats and smiling faces signified a splashing success for the first Rock L. Butler Boat Regatta.
