Behind the Sparkle : Blue Topaz
Although there are four gems that hold a spot on the United States birthstone list for December, today Bethany talks about the most popular: blue topaz.
When it comes to blue topaz, there are many different words that come associated with it: Swiss, Baby Swiss, London, Sky. All of these trade words are used to describe the color of blue topaz. London blue topaz is the darkest, most saturated color, with a slight smokey or inky look to it. Swiss blue topaz is an intense blue that is often described as electric. Baby Swiss is a lighter variety of the Swiss, and Sky blue topaz is the lightest blue and is often confused with aquamarine.
Blue topaz is the most popular of all the color varieties, which include: blue, green, yellow, orange, red, pink, purple and colorless.
Topaz, with its long history, carries with it many myths and superstitions. It was once believed by the ancient Greeks to give strength. During the Renaissance in Europe people thought that topaz could break magic spells and dispel anger. For centuries, many people in India believed that topaz – if worn above the heart – could assure long life, beauty, and intelligence.
For those hard-to-shop-for December birthdays, blue topaz is an excellent choice! Check out bethanysjewelry.com to shop their selection. Use promo code “topaz” to get an additional 10% off all topaz jewelry, or mention this feature in store.
