Baseball, Softball SportsCast – 5/6/19

Liberty’s Savannah Doney and Wellsboro’s Zach Rowland each threw complete games on the mound to lead their teams to victory on Monday, May 6 in rivalry baseball and softball action.

Softball: North Penn-Liberty 2, Wellsboro 0

North Penn-Liberty scored a season sweep of Wellsboro in a 2-0 shutout in 8 innings. Both teams were scoreless after regulation sending the game into extra innings. In the top of the 8th Sara Swingle and Jessica Kouba put together back-to-back base hits then a walk by Mariah Kshir loaded the bases for Mackenzie Heater.

Heater reached 1st on a Wellsboro error that allowed both Swingle and Kouba to score to put the Lady Mounties up 2-0. The Lady Hornets went 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the inning securing the win for Liberty.

Doney threw a complete game, 1-hitter for the win with 14 strikeouts. Kouba led Liberty at the plate going 2-for-4 with a double. Swingle, Kshir, Shaelyn Berguson, and Kylie Holmes also added hits.

Cathryn Brought pitched the full game for Wellsboro, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits with 4 walks and 9 strikeouts. Wellsboro’s lone hit came in the bottom of the 7th on a double by Jena Boyce.

The win improves the Lady Mounties’ record to 7-5 (6-4 NTL Large School Division) on the year while the Lady Hornets fall to 8-6 (7-4 NTL Large School Division).

Baseball: Wellsboro 10, North Penn-Mansfield 1

Wellsboro swept the season series against rival Mansfield as they scored multiple runs in 4 of the game’s 7 innings in a 10-1 win. Wellsboro started off with 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st. Carson Davis doubled to right to score Cam Tennis, then Kaeden Mann reached on an error to score Davis.

Later in the bottom of the 2nd Silas Wagaman bunted to score Zach Rowland then Isaac Keane later singled to right to score Wagaman, making it 4-1.

Wellsboro then added one run each in the 3rd and 4th innings. In the 3rd Lucas Citrino singled on a pop fly to short to score Dylan Abernathy to make it 5-1, then Wagaman scored on a passed ball to make it 6-1 after 4.

The Hornets scored 4 more runs over the final two innings. In the 5th Wagaman hit a double to score Citrino and Rowland then in the 6th Rowland reached on error to score Taynton Repard and Citrino scored on a Tennis walk.

Wagaman led the Hornets at the plate going 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs. Rowland finished 2-for-4 with a triple, Davis was 1-for-3 with an RBI and walk, Citrino was 1-for-3 with an RBI, Tennis was 1-for-4 with an RBI, and Keane was 1-for-5 with an RBI. Rowland threw a complete game, 5-hitter with 3 strikeouts to earn the win.

For the Tigers Jacob Evans and Blaze Deitrick were both 1-for-2 while Logan Tokarz, Gage Martin, and Brion Smith were all 1-for-3 with Tokarz adding an RBI. Logyn Choplosky started on the mound and gave up 7 runs (6 earned) on 7 hits. Bryce Wilson came on in relief for the final 2 innings, giving up 3 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits.

The Hornets improve to 7-5 (7-3 NTL Large School Division) overall while Mansfield falls to 4-9 (4-7 NTL Large School Division).
