Barrett signs letter of intent to play for Mansfield University

by Joe Carreon - May 5, 2022

TROY — Troy High School Senior Ty Barrett signed his letter of Intent to further his academic and athletic careers at Mansfield University on Monday, May 2.

Barrett became Troy’s all-time scoring leader and led the NTL in scoring this past season.

He joins a Mountaineers basketball team that is in desperate need of some help after finishing last season 5-23 and only winning four of their PSAC east match-
ups.

No one is more excited for Barrett than his head coach Steve Renzi.

“It’s amazing, he’s worked really hard to get where he needs to be. He calls it the grind. He’s been trying to put on muscle to get ready to play Division two basketball.”

The PSAC will be a whole other level of competition for Barrett. Coach Renzi knows there are aspects of Barrett’s game that will transition very easily at the next level.

“His offensive game, he’s the best offensive player I have ever been around and I’ve been involved in the NTL and District IV since 1980.”

Mansfield University is a 20 minute drive down route 6. Being close to home was important for Barrett.

“Family, my relationships with the coaches and some of the players, it made my decision much easier,” said Barrett.

Barrett is excited about playing at the next level, especially the caliber of basketball he will be in with the PSAC.

“It’s going to be good competition every night, thats what I look forward to, I feel like I play the best against the best competition,”

Barrett will most definitely bring a new buzz to the Mansfield Mens Basketball program.
