Back To School
MANSFIELD, PA – July 1, 2020 – “We are proud of our success in distance learning this spring and we are reopening the school this fall with a classroom setup as close as possible to the previous norm,” says New Covenant Academy headmaster Kjell Fenn. “Our inherently small school allows for proper safety measures to be easily incorporated into our system.”
NCA plans to begin school on Aug. 20th, 2020. The students will be enrolled in a full 5 day a week schedule as before but with the new health and safety plan in place. The school appointed Mrs. Cathy Dunlap as the Health and Safety Coordinator to oversee that the everyday procedures are in place.
Mrs. Dunlap is responsible for making sure the school adheres to strict safety standards during the pandemic. Dunlap brings her years of prior experience as a Paramedic to this position. “I experienced the SARS pandemic first-hand as an EMT,” she says. “Because of my history, I am committed to the students, families and staff to keeping them as safe as possible.”
NCA began collaborating on the school’s safety plan in late May. The plan includes communication with local and state authorities, increased signage and cleaning procedures throughout the school, and heavily scrutinized field trips and special speakers. Chapel services will continue, but with new protocols in place. Lunches will be the responsibility of the parents. That is, hot lunch will not be served, but rather students will bring lunch from home. Food for sale at lunch includes items that are sealed (e.g., bag of chips, carton of milk, commercially prepackaged foods [e.g., Hot Pockets, Lunchables]).
For athletics, the current programs are planned to continue. Options for virtual coaching and in-home drills will be offered if students are interested. There will be limits to the geographic area of the sports schedules and to the number of students in the locker room.
The full plan in detail is available on NCA’s website, www.ncalions.org. The school is excited to start the new school year and is still accepting applications for enrollment. Call (570) 662-2996 to schedule a tour.
