Back to Basics – Seasons
What’s your favorite season? We’ve just entered into spring (although a driving snow is doing a good job of hiding it at the time of writing) and many consider this their favorite season. The blooming flowers and budding trees are a sign of new life and a fresh start. Others prefer summer. That’s my favorite season. The warm sun, blue skies, and long days are such a joy! Still, others are persuaded by the charm of fall. This is the climax of all that began in spring, matured through summer, and is on bright display in autumn. The beautiful colors, crisp air, and harvest season bring comfort and rest. Though their number is few, there are some who favor winter for its pensive skies, fresh blankets of snow, and slower pace.
Some have compared the changing seasons in nature to the changing seasons in life. Your birth is like spring. Everything is young, full of life and promise. Then comes summer, when things mature and continue to grow. Autumn, however marks a significant change. Maturity presents a climactic display that gives way to winter. During winter, life slows and eventually gives way to death.
This is a fine analogy, but in reality life is not so linear. There are seasons in relationships, in your job, and your hobbies and interests. Life is full of change and as a result can be difficult to keep track of. At times we grow weary of responding to all of the seasons of life we experience. Is it really possible to find balance and peace when everything is always changing?
This feature is entitled “Back to Basics” because what we really need is a return to our foundation. God created us to find our satisfaction and purpose in Him. But, when we yield to the chaos of life we often forget about what matters most — Christ! Apart from Him the seasons of life are nothing more than meaningless hustling.
Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us of what our posture should be in every season of life:
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Let’s get back to basics by pausing, recognizing that God is in control, and turning our hearts to Him. Pray. Be thankful. Know the peace of God that surpasses all understanding, no matter what season of life you are in.
