Attics, Basements & Secret Places Episode 1
In 2003, when I first began to get ideas for the Wellsboro Home Page concept, I envisioned that a regular feature on such an electronic publication would be exploring history and mystery. I love the sense of discovery and adventure that ignites within us. I can remember years ago, as the old Route 15 in Pennsylvania, gave way to the new route – I would look for an old section of that highway and walk it for miles. I would discover all kinds of things – old abandoned houses, water tanks, secret tunnels, caves, railroad tracks, and more. I loved uncovering these mysteries and knew that each discovery had its own story to tell.
When I was a young boy, I loved reading the Hardy Boys books. “The Mystery of the Applegate Treasure” (1956) is based on Franklin W. Dixon’s book, “The Tower Treasure”- was one of my favorites. It was the first of two Hardy Boys productions by Disney for it’s “Mickey Mouse Club” show. My brother Jim and I enjoyed watching them together while eating my Grandfather’s famous Vogt’s Ice Cream.
How about you? Do you remember the Hardy Boys? Do you enjoy mystery, adventure and the thrill of searching for hidden treasure? Today on Wellsboro Home Page, we begin the first in a special series titled: Attics, Basements and Secret Places. This program idea was inspired by our quest for adventure. Our first feature takes us behind the scenes at Dunham’s Department Store (established in 1905) with two of the owners, John and Nancy Dunham and Mike Wood their Operation and Maintenance Manager for the past 42 years.
