Alumni Banquet Highlights 2016

by Sara Vogt - May 30, 2016

The Wellsboro High School Alumni Association presented their 139 Annual Alumni Banquet with 496 guests attending representing a total of 16 classes. The evening was a special time of reminiscing and rekindling old friendships.

In 1992, the Wellsboro High School Alumni Council was formed in order to have a permanent volunteer organization to serve the Wellsboro High School Alumni. The Alumni Association, under the leadership of Bob Blair spent long hours preparing for the event in an effort to make the banquet and gathering of classmates and friends a wonderful memory enjoyed by all.

The evening schedule began at 5:30 with classmates meeting in assigned rooms. This gave attendees the opportunity to visit with longtime friends and classmates so that they could catch up on what’s been going on in their each of their lives over the past five years. Then it was off to the banquet hall for a delightful feast prepared by Harland Catering (Harland class of 1975).

The blessing was offered by Robert Adams and the pledge of allegiance by brothers David and Harry Robinson, all from the class of 1966. Each of the men had served in the armed forces after leaving high school.

Alumni Association President, Bob Blair, opened the evening with introductions and recognitions before presenting this years speakers from the class of 2016, seniors Alexa Singer & Sarah Ingerick. Bob went on to address this year’s seniors by saying, “We hope you will leave here tonight understanding the importance of taking time to reflect on the past and realize your responsibility for our future while participating in the present. At the end of your senior year, you as a group, will never again be assembled as a whole unit … except when you return to your class reunion every 5 years!”

Since 1986 the Wellsboro High School Alumni Association has awarded scholarships to 126 HS seniors totaling $141,220. This year’s scholarship awards went to seniors Taylor Hemenway, Andrea Tsao, Darci Warriner, and Haley Zuchowski. Each was award $1,000.00.

Matt Feil, WASD Board President, welcomed guests and spoke on behalf of the Wellsboro school board. He and his wife, Lisa are both from the class of 1989.

During the evening of celebration many special recognitions took place, such as, retired educators attending (there were over 25 present), oldest attending alumnus, Everitt Vanderhoof (’38), our furthest traveled alumnus, Linda Lee Price (’56) of Washington State. Louis Prevost and Marianne Gaddy from the class of 1966 were given this year’s Alumni of the Year awards.

And finally, the 25th reunion class representative,Gretchen Knaus Regina, and the 50th reunion class representatives, Sharren McElligott Hummel, Marianne Andracik Gaddy and Gail Satterly Ramsey were recognized and had the opportunity to address reunion attendees. Sharren, Marianne and Gail shared about their friendships as school girls and how they were able to cultivate their relationships into their adult lives. They still treasure their relationships and affectionately call themselves, “The Three Musketeers”.

The evening was full of memories, stories and reminiscing even as new lifelong memories were being made right before our eyes.

Special thanks to all of those who worked so hard over the past year to make this evening enjoyable, especially the class agents and the Alumni Council.

Flowers for this special occasion were supplied by Akiko’s Floral Arts – Joe Hewitt of the class of 1979.
