A Warm Welcome for Babies

by Kristy Warren - December 8, 2017

Community hospitals like Soldiers + Sailors Memorial Hospital thrive by the strong support of their friends, neighbors and staff, and Friends of SSMH are encouraging everyone to join them in raising funds to purchase a Panda Warmer for the hospital nursery.

“Warmers are a vital piece of equipment that we use to monitor infants and keep their temperature stable and comfortable,” explains Khara Martin, Patient Care Manager for the OB Unit. “This new, innovative warmer is wonderful because unlike some of the previous models, it has everything we need centrally located in one machine—from built-in scales and warmth to vitals and resuscitation.”

The Panda Warmer features an innovative, recessed heater that keeps the baby safe, warm and content while keeping families and staff cool and comfortable. Using a cleverly compact design, the warmer also creates more room, making it easier to navigate nurseries and patient rooms to interact with the babies. It also ensures easy access to newborns for weighing on the built-in scale, monitoring vital signs and taking x-rays as well as integrated resuscitation systems, which allow staff to quickly access everything they need to deliver resuscitation therapy to high-risk newborns.

“When it came time to deliver my babies, I knew I wanted to deliver right here,” adds Nicole Butters, a patient who recently delivered healthy twin girls at SSMH. “I’d had the experience of being in a larger hospital outside of the area, and it was missing the warmth, compassion and attentiveness of the staff here. I felt like family here.”

Honorary Chairs Brad and Joanne Scovill encourage everyone to join Friends in giving babies the best start close to home. To help meet the $25,000 goal, Brad Scovill, President & CEO of Citizens & Northern Bank, has generously pledged that C&N will match 20% of every dollar the community donates up to $5,000. All donations stay local.

“The beauty of the Friends campaign is that all funds stay local, so over the years, they’ve been able to purchase new equipment and bring new resources to the hospital,” notes Scovill. “Soldiers + Sailors Memorial Hospital has a long history of delivering really high quality health care to our region, and we want to not only maintain that, but help it grow. Every dollar helps us benefit more patients.”

Help SSMH give babies an even warmer welcome by joining the Friends campaign today. For more information or to donate, contact the Susquehanna Health Foundation at 570-320-7460 or visit UPMCSusquehanna.org/donate.
