A Summer of Music

by Sara Vogt, Chloe Quimby - June 1, 2015

Are you looking for a fun, educational camp experience for your children this summer? Mansfield University is offering a variety of camps right here in Tioga County. These camps are not thousands of dollars per week, or hours away—they are right here in our own backyard. Among the many opportunities available, Mansfield is offering a wide array of music camps.

Beginning June 28th, Mansfield is hosting Percussion Camp, Saxophone Camp, Flute Camp, Oboe and Bassoon Camp, and Clarinet Camp. High School Music Camp begins on July 5th, Brass Band Camp on July 12th, and Youth Music Camp on July 14th. Campers can choose to stay overnight for the duration of the camp, or to simply commute to each day’s activities from home.

But what is the value of summer camp to a young student? Why does Mansfield coordinate these summer camps?
Putting these questions to Dr. Jeff Jacobsen, he responds, “[Camps provide] the enrichment, the opportunity to study with perhaps someone who is an expert in the field, and the opportunity to play with other students your own age, your own level…My whole philosophy of teaching revolves around learning as much as I can and passing it on to as many as I can.” These summer camps are another way that MU professors support and serve our area.

Moreover, summer camps give campers a taste of MU, allowing them to check out an excellent university and meet Mansfield faculty members. With the dramatic increase in the cost of college over the years, the chance to introduce high school students to a quality, local institution is invaluable. Through this exposure, our youth can be more informed as they attempt to navigate the (sometimes imposing) choice of where to continue their education.

For more information on the dates of each camp and the daily activities provided, visit their website or contact Mansfield University by phone at 570-662-4710.
