17 Years of Friendship & Hats
When I was growing up, my mom and I loved wearing hats together. Sometimes, the local women’s shop in Wellsboro, Whitmer’s Fashions, would call to have me model the hats for their fashion shows. That was in the 1950’s!
When I saw Christine A. Moore’s hats at the Blue Thistle Boutique in Wellsboro, PA, in the fall of 2007, I immediately went home to ask my husband, John, to come and see them. When he came to see them, he told Christine privately that he would buy me one for Christmas. To throw me off the base of that hope, Christine measured me in case John bought me one down the road! I kept the card because I thought that was all I would get from the visit to see the hats!
I received my Christine A. Moore hat that Christmas of 2007 and was beyond thrilled! My husband of fifty-three years loves to surprise me!
My mom, who was living in our home under hospice care, went to be with Jesus in October of 2008. When she passed into eternity, I called our undertaker, Jackie Buckheit, to tell her of Mom’s passing. When Jackie came to pick her up, I told her she had to have a hat on in the casket because that was my mom! Jackie told me that no one had done it before! I had five hats on the hat rack by the back door; one was my new Christine A. Moore hat. I did not tell Jackie which hat to choose, but she chose the Christine A. Moore hat! I did not tell Jackie about the hat, but I thought that Jackie had good taste! My mom looked beautiful in her casket on the day of visitation, and my friend David Tews asked me if that was my Christine A. Moore hat. I said yes, it is! He was good friends with Christine, so he told her that my new hat had been given to my mom.
Christine’s mom holds a dear place in her heart, so when she found out my new hat went down into glory with my mom, it started an extraordinary sister/friend relationship that has developed over these seventeen years.
When you purchase a hat from Christine, you are purchasing a window into her heart and creativity. She says her creativity is God-inspired through the colorful world He created.
Christine’s hats and sketches are on display at the Gmeiner Art and Cultural Center in Wellsboro, PA, until August 4th. Please stop by and visit!
