by Ed Weaver - September 13, 2017

The Wellsboro XC teams hosted Athens and Wyalusing in their regular season opener on Tuesday, September 12.

Rounding out the rest of the Wellsboro finishers were junior Bergen Weiner (20:14) in 6th, senior Michael Stefanowicz (21:54) in 9th, junior Zack Busch (22:06) was 10th, sophomore Lucas Citrino (23:59) was 18th, senior Logan Morral (24:10) was 20th, freshman Aidan Fletcher (25:15) was 24th, junior Taylor Wheeler (25:18) was 25th, freshman Daniel Swanson (27:18) was 28th, sophomore Tyren Wetzel (31:58) was 30th, and senior Noah Smith (39:58) was 31st.

Athens took both girls races beating both Wellsboro and Wyalusing 23-32. The Lady Hornets beat Wyalusing 23-32.

Senior Anna Bleggi won the girls race in 24:39, Athens’ Emily Arnold (25:01) was 2nd, Wyalusing’s Catherine Brown (25:59) was 3rd, Athens’ Selkie Bishop (26:56) was 4th, and Athens’ Caitlyn Powell (26:59) rounded out the top 5.

“The teams ran well. We raced against a strong Wyalusing team,” said Wellsboro head coach Ron Brought. “They are very fast and very well coached. They’re perennial top runners in the NTL so to come out and finish right behind them isn’t a bad day. The runners performed pretty well overall but we definitely have room for improvement.”

In the Middle School race the Wellsboro girls lost to Athens 22-33 and beat Wyalusing, who didn’t have a full team. Wellsboro’s boys did not have a full team.

The Varsity team’s start their seasons at 1-1. The teams will be back in action on Tuesday, September 19 on the road for a tri-meet with Troy and Northeast Bradford at Northeast Bradford.
