Wellsboro, Liberty earn D4 semi-final wins

NTL volleyball rivals Wellsboro and North Penn-Liberty each scored sweeps in their semi-final matches during the PIAA District IV playoffs at Williamson High School on Tuesday, October 30.

In the first match of the night, the Lady Hornets squared off against Wyalusing. After trailing 15-12 in the first set the Lady Hornets went on a 9-1 run to to the Lady Rams 25-18. Wellsboro won the second set 25-17 then cruised in the third set, 25-9, to take the match and improve to 18-2 on the year.

Caitlyn Callahan led the Lady Hornets with 21 kills, Megan Starkweather had 19 assists and 7 digs, Ryann Adams had 16 digs and 8 points, and Bailey Monks had 16 points and 2 blocks. Breighanna Kemp added 9 assists and 3 kills and Heidi Zuchowski had 4 kills.

Melody Kneller had 10 kills and 12 digs for Wyalusing. Lylah Oswald had 6 kills and 5 digs, Kendall Krewson had 17 assists, and Samantha Wood had 6 digs.

In match two, North Penn-Liberty and Williamson vied to meet Wellsboro in the Thursday’s championship game. The Lady Mounties won that right as they swept Williamson 3-0 and held the Lady Warriors to 10 or fewer points in each set.

Liberty took the first set 25-9, won the second 25-10, and the third 25-7.

Charisma Grega had 10 kills on the night, Brooke Harvey pitched in with 11 and 8 digs, Savanah Doney had 4 aces and 13 digs, and JoAnne McNamara had 17 assists. Maddison Minyo added 4 kills, 3 blocks, and 2 digs.

The District IV finals will take place back at Williamson High School on Thursday, November 1. The Class A final between Canton and Cowanesque Valley will take place at 6:00 p.m. and the Class AA final between Wellsboro and North Penn-Liberty follows at 7:30 p.m.
