Wellsboro Highlights: 11/13/17 – 11/17/17

by Home Page Staff - November 18-19, 2017

It’s time once again to take a look at what happened the past week. The Weekly Highlights are a great way to catch up, but don’t forget that you can always watch the full stories from either our front page or the archives section.

Free Expectant Parent Classes
A child is a blessing from above but they definitely do not come with instructions. If you are like most expectant parents, you have a long list of questions and concerns regarding pregnancy, childbirth, newborn care and nursing. While the internet is a good place to begin the search for answers, nothing compares to getting the facts straight from an experienced OB nurse.

Thankfully, registered nurse Dawn Burke of Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital is a lactation specialist and certified childbirth educator. She teaches 6 free and unique classes on these subjects every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 7pm in the Cedar Conference Room.

Laurel Health Centers: Diabetes Day
Diabetes is the common name for a range of conditions including diabetes mellitus type one and diabetes mellitus type two, diabetes insipidus and gestational diabetes. These are all conditions, which affect how the pancreas (an organ in the digestive system) secretes insulin or how the body reacts to this hormone. Depending on the type and severity, diabetes is controlled by dietary measures, weight loss, oral medication or injected or inhaled insulin. There is a wide range of short and long-term complications of diabetes including foot and eye problems and vascular diseases. It is estimated that one in three residents of the United States will develop diabetes at some point in their life.

It’s a BBQ Conspiracy!
It all began a couple of decades ago when he bought coffee from a local shop in Mansfield called, “Ten West”. The more he went there, the more he noticed the difference from fresh coffee to store-bought coffee. Little by little, he started seeking out quality coffee wherever he went. He then began reading more about coffee; which then started creeping its way into his heart and mind. Long story short, the coffee making went from his front porch, to his Dad’s garage, to what it is now. Thad is now living his dream and sharing it with others.

Conspiracy Coffee also has partnered with Robert Smith and Jeremie Ressler, creating the other side of this unique restaurant – “My Brothers BBQ”. My Brothers BBQ offers something that can’t be found in the Mansfield/Wellsboro area. They have delicious barbecue; ranging from ribs, wings, and pulled pork; along with comfort and soul food. Robert Smith, co-owner and chef, has been cooking since the age of 15. The inspiration that created this passion came from his Mom, Aunt, and Grandma which continues to this day.

Bank On It: Banking Technology
Think about all of the different ways that technology has changed your everyday life. From the way you shop, listen to music and connect with one another, the internet – with the help of personal computers, smartphones and tablets – has transformed the way we live and the way companies serve their customers. And banking is no exception. Innovation in the banking industry has been evolving at a rapid pace and, as a result, it has created more convenience, security and value than ever before.
Over 75% of consumers now have smart phones and expect to have everything easily and immediately accessible from the palm of their hand. This includes their banking – customers want fast, easy ways to check balances, pay bills, deposit checks and open accounts.
Some of the latest technologies being introduced today are intended to improve your banking experience, making it more convenient and secure than ever before.

On the Radar – License to Carry
Questions in regards to carrying a concealed firearm in Pennsylvania and information about the License to Carry are very popular. Having knowledge about your License to Carry, especially your rights and responsibilities, is an important aspect of being a responsible gun owner.

In the state of Pennsylvania, you must be at least 21 years old to apply for a License to Carry. The application can be obtained through your county’s Sheriff’s Department. Once you have completed and submitted the application, the Sheriff’s Office has 45 days to complete a background check and obtain information through the Pennsylvania Instant Check System (PICS) to determine if you are lawfully permitted to concealed carry. The License to Carry gives you the privilege to carry your firearm concealed on your person and in your vehicle. The License is good for 5 years.
