Wellsboro Boys Soccer Preview 2017
After starting the 2016 season with three straight losses, the Hornets rebounded and finished 2nd in the NTL. For 2017, the Hornets look to build off last season.
Head Coach: John Shaffer (8th year, 90-46-4)
2016 Season Record: 15-5
Key Returners: Gabe Leach, Nic Ingerick, Tanner Runyan, Cam Tennis
Players to Watch: Gabe Leach
The Hornets graduated four seniors off last year’s team, most notably Josiah Hill. Hill shattered Wellsboro’s career goal scoring records last year, both for a season (41) and career (94). Over the last two seasons Hill accounted for 79 goals, which the Hornets will have to replace going forward.
Wellsboro will lean on seniors Gabe Leach, Nic Ingerick, and Tanner Runyan to fill the void left by Hill’s graduation. While Ingerick is primarily a defensive player, Leach and Runyan accounted for 16 goals last season. Along with Brett Rudy’s 9 goals last year, the trio of Leach, Runyan, and Rudy will need to step up production.
Wellsboro also lost goalie Casey Hoover to graduation, meaning Nate Redell, who only saw 31 minutes of Varsity action in 2016, will need to learn on the fly.
The Hornets have the right ratio of youth/experience this year, look for them to be NTL contenders with Athens and contend for a District IV title.
