Welcome to Learner Driven!
Today on The Home Page Network we feature our first edition of LEARNER DRIVEN with Sam Rotella, Superintendent of Southern Tioga School District.
First, Home Page talked with Mr. Rotella about the summer months and what he and his team were focused on over student vacation time. Southern Tioga School District has been working on a number of projects, including social/emotional learning, which involves students’ social and emotional connections within the school district. Mr. Rotella said that they would also be including restorative practices of problem-solving and not just a disciplinary approach. This will help students navigate relationships when things go wrong.
In recent weeks there has been a flurry of activity getting ready for the new school year. The list of things that need attention is long, including transportation, and making sure the facilities are up and running. Southern Tioga School District also implements a three-day employee orientation to help prepare for the new school year. This orientation allows Southern Tioga School District employees to understand the overall culture of the district and makes the transition into a new school year go smoothly.
During the second half of today’s broadcast, Mr. Rotella discusses the development of career pathways. (Home Page applauds this effort and believes that this is a critical component to education that is often left out of the equation.) Mr. Rotella said that, traditionally, the focus is only on graduation and/or college readiness. Southern Tioga School District is moving to a focus on career readiness. This year, with the support of their school board, Southern Tioga School District has also hired a new Career Pathways Coordinator, Amanda Capone. Amanda will not only be working within Southern Tioga School District, she will also be working with the Northern Tioga School District and the Wellsboro Area School District to develop career pathways for students.
In today’s conclusion, Mr. Rotella talks about working with the business community to help prepare students for a bright future. Don’t miss it! We hope you will take a few moments to watch today’s encouraging and informational broadcast.
