THE BRIEFING – BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY

After a short hiatus, Chief of Police Jim Bodine joins us again for another edition of The Briefing. Today, the Chief discusses traffic regulations and cautions drivers to be more wary of students due to the start of the school year.

Drivers should be aware of and follow the guidance of crossing guards. “[Crossing guards] are authorized traffic control devices.” says Bodine. These individuals carry direct authority under the police department. “We see people make a ‘right on red’ at a stop sign when a crossing guard is out on the street. You cannot do that. You need to stop.”

Drivers should also watch their speed, especially in the mornings around school areas. Streets leading to local schools have speed limit drops during the school year. Some of these areas include West Avenue in front of the Trinity Lutheran school, Nichols Street in front of Rock L. Butler middle school, and Meade Street in front of Charlotte Lapla elementary school.

Finally, Morris Lane (branches off of Grant Street near the hospital) is closed right now due to bridge construction. Motorists cannot use this road to reach Bacon Street until maintenance is complete.

THE HORNETS TAKE THE ALS CHALLENGE

The Wellsboro Hornets Varsity Football Team takes the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to help find a cure for ALS – and they challenge others, by name, on Wellsboro Home Page.

It’s great to see people from all over the country coming together to fight ALS. We are extremely proud of our Wellsboro Hornets for taking the challenge and helping to raise money to find a cure for ALS. Thanks again to the Wellsboro Volunteer Fire Department for their assistance in helping our Hornets fight ALS. For more information on how you can help, go to ALSA.org.

HILLS CREEK TO HOST TRYATHLON

Tim Morey (our Outdoor Adventures correspondent), took some of the Home Page staff and his family along to demonstrate the trail for the Step Outdoors TRYathlon and 5K Trail Run/Walk, that will held on September 20. This seventh season event will be hosted at Hills Creek State Park.

He stressed that it is not about winning, but about getting off the couch and enjoying the day – all ages are invited to participate – under 10 to over 40!

This event will consist of running for 3.1 miles, paddling for approximately 1.75 miles, and biking for about 8.0 miles. If you’re feeling really energetic, you can take part in each of these yourself. You may also form a team of 2-3 people with each person participating in separate challenge.

Specific age categories and registration forms can all be found at StepOutdoors.org.

An Apple a Day – WHAT’S UP WITH FIBER? – PART 2

The previous edition of An Apple a Day tackled the topic of soluble dietary fiber. This time, Jen discusses insoluble dietary fiber.

What is insoluble fiber? It helps to associate insoluble fiber with something you are already familiar with – Jen likens insoluble fiber to a broom. It benefits our bodies by creating bulk and keeping everything moving through the digestive system. This reduces constipation and helps prevent flare ups of certain gastrointestinal diseases. As an added benefit, fiber provides a feeling of fullness, which is helpful if you are trying to watch your weight.

DREAM HOMES & SECRET RETREATS

Many visitors come to the mountains of Tioga County for refreshment. But there are also many who come back regularly because they own a retreat or seasonal home here. Today we spoke with Christine Moore of Christine A Moore Millinery of New York City. She, and her husband Blake, built their seasonal home here in the woods outside of Wellsboro. Her parents have owned the land on which they built for over 60 years. She has many fond childhood memories of spending summers camping there. When they were considering their dream retreat they looked no further than the land she had come to love. Blake designed the cabin and together they worked for six years to accomplish their goal.

Jill Fidurko of Mountain Valley Realty also spoke with us today and took us on a tour of the beautiful dream home possibilities in Tioga County. (To join our tour, watch the video above!)

Special thanks to Jill Fidurko and Mountain Valley Realty for their time and vision! You can visit their website at mountainvalleyrealtyllc.com.
