Happy Weekend, Tioga County! We hope you had a wonderful Valentine’s Day! It’s time once again to take a look at what happened the past week. The Weekly Highlights are a great way to catch up, but don’t forget that you can always watch the full stories from either our front page or the archives section.

SPORTS DOUBLE FEATURE!

The Mansfield Lady Tigers faced the North Penn Lady Panthers on Friday night. The Tigers are still looking to improve their playoff seeding so this was a crucial game for them. Both teams exchanged few scores early on as sloppy play plagued both squads. It was the second quarter that would define this game as the Tigers held the Panthers to just 4 points in the quarter.

Alyssa Davey-Bostic led all scorers dropping in 21 points on the night. Ali Hillson added 14 and Kaitlyn Garverick had 11.

Becca Toothacher led the Panthers with12 followed by Mariah Berguson with 9. Three Panthers, Berguson, Kline and Smith added 4 points each. Mansfield wins it 62-41.

Thursday night’s game marked a special occasion as it is the last contest to ever be held in North Penn’s famous “Pitt.” North Penn hosted Mansfield and I couldn’t think of a better “farewell game” if you will for this great court.

The scoring was few and far between in the first quarter as both teams could only muster a combined 10 points as the Tigers grasped a 6-4 lead. The offense would pick up in the second quarter, both teams got out on the run and attacked the basket with much more intensity.

Bo Burleigh led all scorers with 18 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists. Chandler Correll added 12 points and 6 rebounds.

For the Panthers Dayton Wood led the charge scoring 13 points. Levi Christman added 10 points. Konnor Manikowski and Dylan Rudinski contributed off the bench scoring 6 and 9 points respectively. North Penn won 60-50.

It was a great contest and the crowd was not let down. The Panthers were embraced by their loyal fans after the game in what was an emotional victory. For the complete recap of both games, click the video link above.

REMOTE INTELLIGENCE TAKES FLIGHT!

Welcome to our first addition of Tioga Tek with Matt Hoppes here on Wellsboro Home Page. This feature is designed to help keep you informed regarding the high technology being developed and/or used here in Tioga County. We hope that you will find this new feature educational and fascinating as we explore these high tech innovations together.

On today’s program, Matt’s special guests are Merlin Benner and Rob Schwarz of Remote Intelligence. The focus today is on unmanned systems in the sky used for both research and development including environmental mapping. Rob Schwarz says that this is just the beginning of this kind of technology and compares it to where the internet was twenty years ago. Things are developing very quickly and Remote Intelligence is on the front edge of this new air-technology.

Merlin and Rob also discuss their development of the Maveric, a unique kind of air system that they hope to sell to both government and civil organizations.

The Maveric Unmanned Aerial System comes complete with three camera systems. A forward looking daytime camera for pilot flight information, a Gimbaled Daytime camera for targeted observation that retracts for landing, and an additional Thermal camera payload for heat signature operations. The Maveric weighs in at just 2.4 pounds and her composite wing can wrap around the fuselage for tube storage and transportation. It can be carried and deployed by an operator in almost any terrain. This platform is quiet and tactical with up to 70 minutes flight time. The Maveric is electric powered and can operate up to 26000 foot elevations. Most flights are 150-200 Ft AGL for best video and picture quality. The brain of the Maveric is fully autonomous so all you have to concentrate on is operating the cameras in high stress operations.

STRUCTURE FIRE IN MIDDLEBURY CENTER!

The Wellsboro Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 11667 Route 287 in Middlebury Center at 5:04 PM late Wednesday afternoon. Route 287 was closed for a period of time while firemen worked on the situation. State Police and utility companies also responded. According to one source the structure involved was a Water Authority Building located at the main corner in Middlebury Center. There were no reports of injuries.

PSU NEWS FROM NATIONAL SIGNING DAY!

Head Coach James Franklin has started a new tradition at Penn State in honor of National Letter of Intent Day. A day that he says is like a holiday for him. Coach Franklin hosted “The Signature Event” to celebrate this year’s recruiting class in the Bryce Jordan Center. The day began with a press conference to discuss the future of Penn State football. Coach Franklin said the recruiting class consists of not only talented young men, but men that will make the school proud both on and off the field.

The event began with numerous performances from the Blue Band, twirlers, Lionettes and cheerleaders. Joshua Johnson, a student who has become famous for tap dancing in the New York City subways to raise money for his tuition, roused the crowd along with students Brittany Hicks and Chris Carmody who performed their original song titled “Diamonds In The Air” in honor of the upcoming THON Dance Marathon.

Former Penn State football star, Lavar Arrington, sat down with Coach Franklin and introduced all 25 members of this year’s recruiting class.

IT’S VALENTINE’S DAY!

Happy Valentine’s Day from all your family here at Wellsboro Home Page! Valentine’s Day – also known as the Feast of Saint Valentine – and it’s traditions are observed on February 14 in many countries around the world. Back in 1913, Hallmark offered their very first Valentine’s Day cards. Today, the U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately 145 million valentines are sent each year in the U.S. Half of these valentines are given to family members other than spouses, usually to children – especially dads doting on their daughters. Valentine’s Day has become a day to express our love.

What is love? Webster’s dictionary defines it as a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person. The Bible defines love, in action, this way in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (from the New International Version – NIV): “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.”

Verse 8 is such a great encouragement and gives God’s hope to all of us. Love never fails.

Together, let’s make this year’s Valentines Day count. Remember, when you let special people in your life know that you love them, it doesn’t have to be expensive. It just needs to come from your heart. What comes from the heart touches a heart.
