Weekly Highlights – 08/24/15 – 08/28/15

by Home Page Staff - August 29-30, 2015

It’s time once again to take a look at what happened the past week. The Weekly Highlights are a great way to catch up, but don’t forget that you can always watch the full stories from either our front page or the archives section.
_______

Sports Previews – Tennis & Cross Country

The Wellsboro girls tennis is coached by Jill Gastrock, who is back for he fourth season with the team and finished the 2014 season with an 8-5 record and a trip to District IV playoffs. With a roster loaded full of upperclassmen (six seniors & two juniors), the Lady Hornets should be primed to expand on their success last year and make another playoff run. The team begins their 2015 season today as they host Galeton at Packer Park at 4:00.

The boys cross country team is looking to improve upon a 2014 season where they struggled because they were a very young team. While still young and with no seniors on this year’s roster, the boys team is looking to bounce back and make a run for an NTL team title. The girls on the other hand are looking to improve upon a great 2014 season where they only lost one meet to league champion Northeast Bradford. Both the boys and girls cross country teams open their regular season on Thursday, September 10 in Wyalusing at the Lasagna Invite.

The Briefing – Back to School

It’s that time of year again. School is back in session and Chief Jim Bodine would like for everyone to have a safe school year!

Here are some reminders to motorists, parents and students:

Motorists and Parents – please pay attention to the crossing guards as they are there to make sure that children cross streets safely. If you are at a stop where you are allowed to turn right on red, make sure that you know where everyone is; a small child or toddler can walk into your blind spot very easily – be aware and take your time.

Students – please don’t assume that because the cross-walk sign is lit that it is always safe for you to cross. Some motorist may not see the sign or you may proceed through the intersection. Please look both ways before crossing and if you are at a location with a crossing guard, wait for them to lead you across – that is what they are there to do.

Decorating Decoded – What’s Your Style?

There are literally hundreds of “styles” in which to decorate your home. Here are some examples: Arts & Crafts, Cottage, Rustic, Coastal, Baroque, Victorian, Mediterranean and the list goes on and on. No wonder people are confused. I even took some online quizzes to see what they determined my style to be and I got traditional, polished casual, mountain lodge and French country. While I like elements from all of these particular styles, I also like abstract paintings and modern glass sculpture, so how do they fit in?

The Tyoga Country Club

Since 1923, the picturesque Tyoga Country Club has been delighting golfers both native and non, and they even merited a four-star rating from Golf Digest. Scrupulously managed, Tyoga Country Club provides golfers a beautiful setting. Chris Morral, President of the club, comments, “We’re really lucky to have this type of serene setting and fortunate to be able to play on a course that is not crowded and [is] appreciated by its membership.”
Professional golfer, Matt Sternquist remarks that while the course isn’t too long, it is a challenge. He specifically deems the 18th hole, “a very tough finishing hole…a good way to end your day.” Sternquist also explained that five sets of tees are available, making the course accessible to both the novice and more advanced golfers.

Back to Basics – Endurance

Running events and competitions have increased in intensity and flair in recent years. From color runs to tough mudders to savage races – they all have the same goal: to push you to your limits to test your endurance. How is your endurance? “If you’re like me, you’re not likely to sign up for the next savage race,” says Pastor TJ. “A turkey trot is more than enough to test my limitations.”

But how well do you endure the shortcomings of others? Have you ever been in a relationship that tested your relational endurance? It could be your marriage, your time with your kids, co-workers, friends, extended family or somebody who just really knows how to push your buttons. Sometimes you may wonder how long you can take it?
