The Weekly Briefing – Drug Drop-Off

by Joe Carreon - July 3, 2014

Today on Wellsboro Home Page the Weekly Briefing tackles an important issue of prescription drug disposal. Wellsboro Police Chief, Jim Bodine, discusses the importance of taking care of old medications and introduces the drug drop-off box for Tioga County.

Instead of flushing your medication down the toilet or throwing them in the trash, it is important to take the time to dispose of them properly. This can be done by putting the medications in a plastic bag and placing them in the box. All prescription drop-offs are anonymous. Absolutely no needles or syringes should be placed in the drop off box.

Disposal of unwanted, unused or expired drugs is one of four strategies for reducing prescription drug abuse and diversion. The other strategies include education of health care providers, patients, parents and youth; enhancing and encouraging the establishment of prescription drug monitoring programs in all the states; and increased enforcement to address doctor shopping and pill mills.

The drug drop off box is located at the Wellsboro Police Department and is open normal business hours Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
