After a short hiatus, Chief of Police Jim Bodine joins us again for another edition of The Briefing. Today, the Chief discusses traffic regulations and cautions drivers to be more wary of students due to the start of the school year.

Drivers should be aware of and follow the guidance of crossing guards. “[Crossing guards] are authorized traffic control devices.” says Bodine. These individuals carry direct authority under the police department. “We see people make a ‘right on red’ at a stop sign when a crossing guard is out on the street. You cannot do that. You need to stop.”

Drivers should also watch their speed, especially in the mornings around school areas. Streets leading to local schools have speed limit drops during the school year. Some of these areas include West Avenue in front of the Trinity Lutheran school, Nichols Street in front of Rock L. Butler middle school, and Meade Street in front of Charlotte Lapla elementary school.

Finally, Morris Lane (branches off of Grant Street near the hospital) is closed right now due to bridge construction. Motorists cannot use this road to reach Bacon Street until maintenance is complete.
