Troy softball upsets Liberty, 4-3
The North Penn-Liberty Lady Mounties softball team was knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten after suffering a 4-3 loss to Troy on Friday, April 13.
Liberty took an early lead in the bottom of the first. With Sarah Swingle on base and Brooke Harvey at bat, Harvey reached on error on the Troy first baseman while Swingle advanced to third base. The bobble at first sent Swingle home. Swingle slid under the tag at home plate to put Liberty up 1-0.
Late in the third Savannah Doney doubled to left field to score Abby Heatley making it 2-0.
Troy, however, would take over the lead with a 3-run fifth inning. Liberty though tied it up an inning later. A Mariah Kshir double started things off for the Lady Mounties. Jessica Kouba then singled to score Kshir tying it at 3-3.
Troy would go on for the upset and hand Liberty there first loss in the top of the seventh. With Riley McClellan on second and Nicole Spalding at the plate, Spalding laid down a bunt right in front of the catcher. Doney charged the bunt from the pitches circle to throw out Spalding at first. Troy then capitalized on a Liberty error as they tried to hold McClellan at third. The throw got away from the Mounties allowing McClellan to score for the go-ahead run.
North Penn-Liberty had a hard time hitting Troy’s Vanessa Watson as they only managed 5 hits on the afternoon. Heatley was 2-for-4, Kshir and Kouba were both 1-for-3, and Doney was 1-for-4.
Doney pitched a complete game allowing 4 runs (one earned), on 8 hits with 8 strikeouts and a walk.
The loss drops the Lady Mounties to 4-1 (4-1 NTL Large School Division). The team will return to action this afternoon for a non-league game against Benton.
