Tioga Tek – Small Airport, Big Tech!

by Joe Carreon - April 18, 2014

Today on Home Page Matt Hoppes takes us to the Wellsboro-Johnston Airport to talk with Airport Manager, Craig Musser, about the A.W.O.S. (or Automated Weather Observation System). The A.W.O.S gives the airport accurate weather data helping aircrafts on approach. Before the system was installed, aircraft were dependent on weather from Elmira and Williamsport. This is helpful seeing that our weather in Tioga County may be different. This allows instrument pilots to descend to a lower altitude and land easier. Another benefit of this technology is the information it provides medical life flights. Pilots can analyze the data provided by the observation system enabling better landings.

Matt and Craig later took us out to the A.W.O.S tower and explained some of the intricacies of the system and how it works.

For more information on the A..W.O.S and the Wellsboro Johnston Airport, you can visit www.saiawos3.com/N38 or http://50.120.195.226/, or visit the airport’s website at http://www.wellsborojohnstonairport.com.
