The Grand Canyon Photography Club

by Melissa Bravo, Sara Vogt - July 15, 2016

The Grand Canyon Photography Club was founded in 2000 by Art and Christine Heiney, who are still members. Last year the club voted unanimously to extend Life Membership to them on the 15th Anniversary of the GCPC.

The club has inspired amateur, intermediate and professional photographers to expand their senses and delve deeper spiritually, emotionally and physically into the art of photography for the last sixteen years. From that gathering of like-minded individuals has come a plethora of exceptional photographic works, many of which are now on display in the lobby gallery at the Deane Center in downtown Wellsboro.

There are nearly 50 members in the group and they meet on the second Tuesday of every month, almost always at the Gmeiner Art Center behind the Green Free Library (from 7:00-9:00 p.m.). Monthly programs vary to help educate all members. Following the program, the group breaks for a few minutes for refreshments and then reconvenes for a “critique” of the monthly theme. Each member is encouraged to submit an image. A critique leader talks about the image and all of the members chip in with what they like about the image and possibly what might be done to make a very good image great!

Please take a moment to watch today’s feature and learn more about the upcoming July 17th reception (from 2:00-4:00pm) with members Bruce Dart and Ken Meyer and see a sneak peak of some of the art work for sale.

To connect with member photographers visit the club’s website gallery here.

Have you always had a passion and interest in photography? You are invited to share your enthusiasm with others at the annual monthly meeting to be held next on Tuesday, August 9th starting at 7pm in the Gmeiner Art Center located next to the Green Free Library in downtown Wellsboro.

To see a preview of the quality and commitment members have to advancing their own and each others knowledge in areas like lightening and composition see this month’s newsletter featuring professional Gary Thompson who is a principal at HUNT Engineers, Architects & Land Surveyors, P.C. located at Airport Corporate Park in Big Flats, NY.

You can view more member photography here.

Hope to see you there!

GCPC-3
Curt Weinhold was the first presenter for the Photography Club in 2000 and while we were shooting the feature he came in to look at the exhibit, not knowing that we were there to do the feature. A wonderful reunion! Some of Curt’s artistry can be seen on the walls of the Lumber Museum.

Special thanks to Ken Meyer for joining us and for providing additional photos.
