Susquehanna Healthy!

by Sara Vogt - February 19, 2015

Dwindling Divas, Fat Busters, Flab to Fab, Food Fighters, Thin It to Win It, Slim Down Sisters, Waisting A Way, and West Ave Wellness Warriors; what do these names have in common?

These are just a few of the team names in the 2015 Weight Loss Challenge going on at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital.

But this isn’t just happening here in Wellsboro – three other hospitals of Susquehanna Health are also participating in this weight loss competition. This is their first four- campus-wide weight loss competition. The participants include 108 teams with 1,042 members, which is approximately 30% of the Susquehanna Health organization. Here in Wellsboro there are 240 participants in 25 teams. The challenge began on January 16th and extends for sixteen weeks, ending on May 8, 2015.

In May, there will be two winning teams – one for total team weight loss and the other for percent of body fat lost (the same team cannot win both categories).

The winning teams will receive eight hours of PTO per member.

Today on Home Page we spoke with Jerrod M. Ferrence MS, CHC, CCS, CPT, one of the Health & Wellness Educators for Susquehanna Health. He explained that those who enter this challenge are encouraged, educated and supported by the management of Susquehanna Health to be “Susquehanna Healthy.” Not only does this assist those who have joined the competition, but also the community where they live.

Jerrod also said that “this program is not necessarily about weight loss, it is about having fun and building rapport with the hospital and those in the community … it is about health and wellness.” This attitude of having fun has made it enjoyable for the teams as they challenge each other during this friendly competition. The team members support each other as they learn to be healthier. Each team also has a captain who keeps the team motivated during the sixteen weeks.

We want to encourage all of us, and especially those who have joined this challenge, to be more “Susquehanna Healthy” in 2015. We will be following the teams’ progress along the way. If you would like more information on staying healthy, you can visit the Susquehanna website at Susquehannahealth.org or contact their Nutrition Care Center.
