Students Stick Booze to Fight Abuse

by Sarah Vickery - November 19, 2015

Choose not to lose!

Today on Wellsboro Home Page, correspondent Sarah Vickery joins the Wellsboro High School SADD Club, along with Apryl Tubbs from the Tioga County Partnership for Community Health. Their goal today: to remind those purchasing alcohol not to provide that alcohol to minors. To help accomplish this, Vickery and Tubbs headed down to Steve’s Beverage in Wellsboro to sticker cases of alcohol. The stickers say, “When you choose to host, you lose the most.”

According to the Partnership, the most common gateway substance used in Tioga County is alcohol. Overall, 42.7% of high school students in this county have used alcohol in their lifetime.

Joining the SADD Club and the Partnership were Wellsboro Police Chief Jim Bodine and County Commissioner Mark Hamilton. Chief Bodine says that many parents feel that they are within their parental rights to serve alcohol to a minor within their own home. This is, in fact, illegal. No one of drinking age is legally permitted to purchase alcohol for those under 21 years of age.
County Commissioner Mark Hamilton addressed the group and thanked them for their help in this matter.

Surrounding Christmas and its festivities, drinks are enjoyed by many. However, partakers must consider both responsibility and consequences. As holiday cheer flows freely, please make sure that—for those under 21—alcohol does not.

Home Page would like to give a special thank you to Steve’s Beverage Center in Wellsboro for supporting this important event and welcoming our students, law enforcement, community leaders and Home Page cameras into their place of business.
