SportsCast: Volleyball Semi-Finals

by Ed Weaver - November 1, 2017

NTL volleyball teams invaded Williamson High School for the District 4 AA semi-finals, with both Tioga County teams pulling out victories.

In game one, Wellsboro took on Wyalusing.

First set – After a volley, Bri Keane sets up Caitlyn Callahan for the back row kill. Wellsboro took the first set, 25-16.

Second set – Wellsboro’s Hannah Burnett digs the kill attempt, Keane gets underneath it for the set, then Cheyenne Sherman slams it home for the kill. With the Rams serving, Burnett passes it up to Keane, then Jill Graver gives it a little push to win the set, 25-14.

Third set – Wyalusing rallied to trail 2 sets to 1. Karlye Huffman sets up Melody Kneller for the kill, as the Rams edge Wellsboro 26-24.

Fourth set – After a block at the net, Kneller again comes up with a huge kill at set point for another 26-24 win, tying the match up at 2-all.

Fifth set – Kneller sends the kill down in the middle of Wellsboro’s defense to tie it up at 2 early on. Later, after a a long volley, Megan Starkweather skies for the kill to tie it back up at 12.

Set point – After another long volley, Ryann Adams passes to Keane, who sets up Sherman. The ball looks to bounce off both players out of bounds. Wyalusing was initially awarded the point, but after some discussion, it was ruled the ball hit off Wyalusing, giving Wellsboro an 18-16 set win, and 3-2 overall victory.

In game 2, top-seeded North Penn-Liberty took on Troy, sweeping them in 3 straight sets.

First set – Ali Koval comes up with the dig, then JoAnne McNamara drops one in over the net. Liberty took the first set, 25-6.

Second set – Charisma Grega receives the serve, McNamara makes the set, then Grega finishes it off the with kill. Maddison Minyo gave the Lady Mounties a 25-7 victory, putting them up 2 sets to 0.

Third set – Mariah Kshir gets the ball and passes to Haley Monks, who sets up Brooke Harvey for the left-handed kill. Harvey then finished the next point on back-to-back kills. Liberty took the set 25-14, completing the sweep.

The wins by Wellsboro and Liberty setup the rivals’ third match of the year, with this one for all the marbles and a District 4 AA title. Both teams will square off back at Williamson High School on Thursday, November 2 at 7:30 pm, following the Class A game between Canton and Cowanesque Valley.
