SportsCast: NTL Weekend Basketball

Wellsboro, North Penn-Mansfield and North Penn-Liberty’s basketball teams were all in action on Friday, January 19 and Saturday, January 20.

Wellsboro 67, North Penn-Liberty 36

The Wellsboro Varsity Boys Basketball team won their 14th straight game by defeating North Penn-Liberty 67-36 on Friday, January 19.

The Hornets jumped out to an early 13-7 lead behind 7 points from Dalton Prough, then put the game away by outscoring the Mounties 22-6 in the second to lead 35-13 at halftime.

Wellsboro kept the pedal down to start the second half as they outscored Liberty 18-8 to lead 53-21 heading into the fourth quarter. Liberty outscored Wellsboro 15-14 in the final frame, but the Hornets’ lead was too was much to overcome.

Prough led all scorers with a game-high 17 points and finished with 11 rebounds for a double-double. Quinn Henry finished with 12, Collin Pietropola and Andrew Brelo scored 10 points each, Brandyn Tuttle had 9, Nic Ingerick scored 7, and Hunter Brown rounded out the scoring with 2 points.

Tuttle added 7 rebounds before fouling out, Henry had 4 assists and 4 steals, Pietropola had 5 rebounds, and Ingerick made 4 steals. Brown also grabbed 3 rebounds.

The win improves the Varsity team’s record to 15-1 (11-0 NTL Large School Division). The team will be back in action on Wednesday, January 24 against Williamson.

North Penn-Mansfield 47, Troy 18

The North Penn-Mansfield Lady Tigers improved to 5-7 as they beat Troy on Saturday, January 20.

Mansfield jumped out to an early 11-2 lead after the first quarter and never looked back as they try to get back in the District IV playoff hunt.

The Lady Tigers’ defense held Troy to just 14 total points over the final 3 quarters of play while scoring 36 of their own.

Jaime Palmer led all scorers with 11 points, Joanne McNamara finished with 9, and Jeanette Montefusco added 8. Shaelyn Berguson scored 6, Alyssa Smith pitched in with 5, Hannah Bowens added 3, Lizzie Welch and Riley David scored 2 points each, and Alaina McKee rounded out the scoring with a point.

North Penn-Mansfield travels to Canton on Tuesday.

Wellsboro 61, North Penn-Liberty 21

The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team cruised to a 61-21 win over North Penn-Liberty on Saturday, January 20.

The Lady Hornets outscored Liberty 22-9 in the first quarter then allowed just 9 more points the remainder of the game as they outscored the Lady Mounties 39-12 to remain perfect on the year.

Tory Self paced Wellsboro, and led all scorers, with 22 points, all in the first half. Emma Poirier finished with 16, Lizzie Poirier and Cathryn Brought scored 9 points each, Liza Manning added 3, and Mikel Shabloski rounded out the scoring with 2 points.

Brought nearly finished with a double-double with 10 rebounds, and Self added 8 assists and 5 steals to her point total. Manning grabbed 6 rebounds, Emma Poirier made 9 steals, and Lizzie Poirier had 5 rebounds and 3 steals.

The win improves the Lady Hornets’ record to 13-0 (10-0 NTL Large School Division). The team will be back in action on Monday, January 22 on the road against Jersey Shore.
