Run Past Cancer 5K & Fun Run

by Kristine Worthington - October 25, 2016

You have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others here in Tioga County. On Saturday, October 29th, there is a fun filled community event planned in Mansfield. This event, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, is an opportunity to raise money and help cancer patients in Tioga County.

Katrina Toth-Penner and her family know first-hand how important the help of the community can be. Katrina is an 11th grade student at North Penn-Mansfield High School. Both Katrina and her brother were diagnosed with cancer and underwent treatments at the same time. Katrina remembers the car trips back and forth to the treatment center, and the financial support that the community generated to help her family with the expenses. She also remembers going to fund raising events and seeing friends and family members. Katrina said, “When you see your friends out there supporting you, or your family out there showing you that they are there for you; that they’ve got your back, it’s really something else.” Katrina and her brother won their fight. She hopes we will join together on October 29th to help other local families who are currently struggling with cancer.

To get involved join us at Smythe Park in Mansfield on October 29th, as we run and walk past cancer. Choose the activity level that is right for you and your family. There is a 1 mile walk/run event and a 5K event. Registration will be open right up to race time, or you can pick up a registration form today. Registration forms for the 5K and the 1 mile fun walk/run can be picked up at Wild Asaph Outfitters at 71 Main Street, in Wellsboro or Oswald Cycle Works at 7 North Main Street, in Mansfield.

Checking-in for the events begins at 8:30AM, on October 29th, at Smythe Park. The 1 mile fun walk/run will begin at 9:30AM and the 5K begins at 10AM. Participants are allowed and encouraged to take part in both events.

The registration fee for the 1 mile walk run is $15 with a maximum fee of $30 for immediate family members. The cost for the 5K run is $25. All of the money raised at this event will go to eradicating cancer and helping patients in Tioga County.

Terry Borneman, an American Cancer Society volunteer, has helped coordinate this healthy community event for two years. In our interview, Terry reminded us, “Cancer is a word not a sentence”. Terry’s family has felt the impact of cancer and he would like to see us “run past cancer”. Terry says, “(This event gives us) a healthy choice of something (we) can do to help us raise funds to eradicate cancer”. Many community members have donated gifts to make this event extra special. Everyone who participates in either of the walk/run events will receive a free small ice cream from Scoops in Wellsboro or in Covington. Top runners in the 5K event will win medals. Also remember, all participants are encouraged to ramp up the fun by wearing costumes. The top costume participants will be awarded prizes. Prizes will be awarded for Best Dressed, Funniest, Scariest, Most Unusual, Cutest, Best Fictional Character, Best Group and Coolest Celebrity.

We can help eradicating cancer and help local families! Katrina, Terry, and all of us here at the Home Page Network encourage everyone to come out and enjoy this healthy, fun community event that will help the fight against cancer. Go to Smythe Park on Saturday October 29th, be healthy, have fun, win prizes, and help Tioga county residents who are running their race against cancer.

For more information about participating in the 5K or 1 Mile Walk/Run or sponsorship, call Terry Borneman at (410) 428-8615 or Jordyn Howe at (607) 857-8076.

Special thanks to our guests; Terry Borneman and Katrina Toth-Penner.
