Personal Profiles: Mrs. Getty

There's always something new to learn with Mrs. Getty

by Home Page Staff - December 4, 2018

In today’s Personal Profiles, we meet with Wellsboro Area High School Chemistry teacher, Tiffany Getty. Mrs. Getty takes us through what stimulated her interest in a teaching career, how she is furthering her teaching, what goes on in her classroom, and what she wants her students to gain from her class.

From a young age, Mrs. Getty always enjoyed learning new things and had many people, including her teachers, which encouraged her to do so. She always had a passion for knowledge and others. She found her desire for chemistry while she was in college, with the help of her chemistry professor, who was a wonderful role model and teacher. She wanted to spread that knowledge and inspiration to others. Mrs. Getty decided teaching would be a great way to do both of those things.

Mrs. Getty is currently furthering her education by going back to college to get her Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership at Wilkes University. In the hopes of gaining more knowledge for teaching purposes, and to overall, improved herself. Going back to school is allowing her to experience what it is like to be a student again. This is influencing her teaching and understanding of her students for the better.

Mrs. Getty’s classroom is very interactive and she uses a systematic teaching style. She often does experiments to help students understand her lessons. Recently, she has been tying in liquid nitrogen experiments into her lessons, which was donated along with its container, by Donald Strickland, a local farmer from Stony Fork. Mrs. Getty also creates and sings songs about relative content such as “Gas Laws Baby”, a parody of “Ice Ice Baby”, to help her students with remembering the Gas Laws.

There is a lot to take out of Mrs. Getty’s class, but she primarily wants her students to be inspired. To her, it does not matter if her students do not have a niche for science. There is always something new to try, learn, and gain from her class. Whether it be part of a lesson, an experiment, or just her personal experience. She wants to help her students find a part of themselves, a passion that will help them decide what they want to do in the future. “In order to be good at something you need to experience a variation of different perspectives, such as merging the arts with the sciences, or learning in creative ways,” she stated, and that is just what she intends to give to her students.
