Panthers spoil Towanda Homecoming, 38-6

by Ed Weaver - October 15, 2018

The North Penn-Mansfield Panthers nearly pitched a shutout against the Towanda Black Knights during their Homecoming festivities with their fifth straight win.

It took the Panthers nearly the entire first quarter to score, but once they found the end zone for the first time they never let up. With 32 seconds remaining, Garrett David capped a Panther drive with a 5-yard jaunt into the end zone. Kevin Alexander followed with the extra point, and the Panthers led 7-0.

David found the end zone later in the second quarter. With 3:32 remaining he again rushed in from 5 yards out to put North Penn-Mansfield up 14-0. After a quick three-and-out by the Black Knight’s offense, the Panthers took over near midfield. From there, QB Brent Burleigh dialed up a deep pass to Dylan Meyer down to the Black Knight 10. A couple plays later Burleigh hit Justin Shedd on a wide receiver screen from 6 yards to give the Panthers a 21-0 lead with 1:21 left in the opening half.

The score remained that way until the 7:34 mark of the third quarter. Towanda’s offense finally put a drive together into North Penn territory. North Penn’s defense did their job and pushing the Black Knights backward, but on 4th-and-27 from the 30, QB Tanner Kunkle unleashed a bomb to Brett Crispell in the end zone to pull Towanda within 21-6 after the Black Knights failed on the conversion.

The Black Knight touchdown didn’t phase the Panthers, however, as they put 3 more points on the scoreboard their following drive on a 31-yard Alexander field goal. They would also go on to score twice more in the fourth quarter.

David broke off a 63-yard run with 6:42 remaining to give the Panthers a 31-6 lead. On Towanda’s following drive the Panthers’ defense came up with a turnover to setup a score. Gabe Fleeger picked off Kunkle on a pass attempt and returned it 33 yards down to the Towanda 2. From there, Cameron Andrews finished the drive giving the Panthers the 38-6 road win.

Burleigh finished 12-of-17 on the night through the air for 192 yards and the touchdown to Shedd. Shedd caught 5 passes for 26 yards and Meyer caught 3 for 99. David led the North Penn ground attack with 129 yards and 3 touchdowns on 14 carries while making 13 tackles and forcing a fumble on defense.

Up next for North Penn-Mansfield (6-2, 5-0 NTL Large School Division) is a road game next Friday, October 19 against the undefeated Canton Warriors, 26-16 winners over Wellsboro.
