Outdoor Adventures at SPRINGFEST!

Kayaking, fly fishing, hiking and more at Hills Creek State Park!

by Tim Morey - May 13, 2014

Spring has sprung: time to play in the park! Come out Saturday, May 17 and use equipment for FREE: kayaking, canoeing, kids’ fishing, and fly tying & casting. It’s STEP OUTDOORS SPRINGFEST at Hills Creek State Park from 10-3. Enjoy the concession stand for lunch. There’s always kids’ crafts, hiking and bird watching. Visit stepoutdoors.org for more information or call Hills Creek State Park at 570-724-4246.

Plans for the 8th annual SPRINGFEST at Hills Creek State Park, Saturday May 17, 2014.

Paddle the lake by kayak or canoe with instruction by the Mansfield University Kayak Club and other volunteers. All equipment provided.

Kids can catch a fish with ample poles, tackle and bait supplied by the park and led by park staff and volunteers. Licenses are required for anyone 16 or over and all regulations must be followed. Fishing has been great so far this year, so plan for success!

Plant a seed and get a little crafty at the kids craft station. Prepare to get your hands a little dirty.

Tie a fly and learn how to cast a fly rod with a little help of the Tiadaghton Trout Unlimited chapter. All equipment provided.

Get your picture with Smokey Bear, who is slated to make a guest appearance (unless he’s fighting a forest fire that day). He always brings along great give-away items for all the kids too!

Test your forestry knowledge with forestry displays or on a guided hike, both led by Tioga State Forest staff. (times to be announced on the website)

Want even more? Challenge yourself with a 3-mile run around the lake, led by members of the Tyoga Running Club. (times to be announce on the website)

Top it off with some ice cream – the park concession stand will be open! (They offer lunch too.)

Make your own adventure and enjoy the park. Trails are open to dogs (on a leash) and park maps are available at the event and throughout the park.

Most events will occur between 10am and 3pm but some have specific start times this year.

You can even come early, and attend the 8am Saturday morning birding series. Meet at the park office for a couple hours of birding throughout the park led by Tiadaghton Audubon volunteers. Bring your binoculars if you have them.

If you need an accommodation to participate in park activities due to a disability, please contact the park you plan to visit. With at least three days notice, interpreters for people who are deaf or hard of hearing are available for educational programs.
