Our Communities, Our Future

by Sara Vogt - April 8, 2014

A community workshop was held last Thursday night at the Whitneyville Fairgrounds. Citizens of Wellsboro, Charleston, Delmar and Duncan attended. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss a comprehensive plan which focuses on the community’s physical development, as well as its social and economic quality of life. Residents made suggestions regarding the development of a comprehensive plan for the aforementioned municipalities. The evening began with an opening from Consultant Richard Truscello of the EADS Group.

The majority of the night ran as an open forum for discussion. Suggestions were collected and displayed in a slide show. Some of the changes our residents are looking for include:

Maintaining the quality of our water supply, the attraction of new businesses (specifically small businesses), and growth of our passenger railway (particularly between our area and Corning). Several attendees pressed the need for separate commercial and residential areas and improved land-use management. Tax incentives and reductions were also discussed. Residents also expressed the desire to see an increased promotion of tourism.

We can’t stress enough how important it is for the public to participate in this planning. If you’d like to take part in shaping our community, you can take a survey here. You can also make suggestions through interactive comment mapping (click here). To learn more about this whole process, visit WCDDplan.org.

We look forward to changing our community with you.
