North Penn-Liberty sweeps Wellsboro

by Ed Weaver - September 26, 2018

Even though Tuesday’s volleyball game between North Penn-Liberty and Wellsboro was a regular season game, the atmosphere in North Penn-Liberty’s gym was that of a District IV playoff final. Fans from both teams eagerly cheered on the two undefeated Tioga County rivals, until the Lady Mounties came out on top of the slug fest.

Coming into the game the Lady Mounties have yet to drop a set, winning every game in three sets. Wellsboro, on the other hand, had only been taken to four sets once. On Tuesday, North Penn-Liberty kept up their streak as they handed the Lady Hornets a loss in 3 sets.

All three sets on the night were highly contested. In each set North Penn-Liberty would take an early lead, Wellsboro would battle back, then Liberty would eventually put the set away. Liberty took the first set 25-22 and the last 25-20.

In the second set both teams battled back and forth and went into extra play. Like the first set Liberty jumped out to an early lead. After a Wellsboro timeout, the Lady Hornets rallied to take the lead but the Lady Mounties stormed back. With both teams giving it their all they remained tied at set point, neither one gaining the needed two-point advantage, until two unforced errors by Wellsboro gave Liberty the 30-28 win.

For Wellsboro Caitlyn Callahan had 14 kills and 14 digs, Ryann Adams had 14 digs and 11 points, Megan Starkweather had 18 assists and 9 points, and Heidi Zuchowski had 6 kills. Breighanna Kemp added 8 digs, 7 points, 6 assists and 2 blocks and Bailey Monks had 3 kills.

For Liberty Brooke Harvey had 10 kills, 18 digs, 2 aces, and 7 points; Charisma Grega had 8 kills, 15 points, and 1 ace; Savannah Doney had 11 points, 2 aces, and 11 digs; Mariah Kshir tallied 4 kills, 5 points, 1 ace, 5 blocks, 10 assists; Maddison Minyo recorded 4 kills, 5 blocks, 4 points; and JoAnne MacNamara had 15 assists, 3 points, and 1 ace.

The win improves the Lady Mounties to 7-0 and ends Wellsboro’s undefeated season start at 8-1. Both teams are back in action on Thursday, September 27. Liberty hosts Towanda and Wellsboro hosts Troy.
