MU’s Big Event Serves Community
On Saturday, April 22, 2017, Mansfield University held The Big Event in partnership with Mansfield University’s Student Government Association and Community Service Club.
The Big Event is a day-long service project where students, faculty, and staff volunteer their time to give back to the surrounding communities.
Home Page correspondent Samuel Moss had the opportunity to speak with event coordinators, Frank Crofchick and Shelby Bartlett at the event.
Frank explained that The Big Event was brought back about four years ago and has steadily gained momentum—every year has added to the number of volunteers participating and hours of service provided, with last year’s event logging 1300 hours of community service. This year over 400 volunteers signed up to participate and The Big Event is projected to provide 1400 hours of community service when the results are tallied.
Co-coordinator Shelby Bartlett commented that because Mansfield is such a small university and community, “It is great for us to come together and be one big family and do something great together, so that’s what it means to us.”
The students, too, are inspired by The Big Event and the opportunity they have to positively impact the community and give back. There is a definite bonding of the community and the university through the event.
The impact that The Big Event has on the community is wide-ranging – from cleaning up litter in town, to sprucing up the YMCA; from welcoming prospective students to Mansfield University at Decker Gymnasium, to helping out local churches.
The Big Event is a wonderful example of the heart and work ethic of Mansfield University and the sense of community that they instill in their students. They are a great reminder to us all to do our part in giving back to our community—every day.
