Mansfield pulls off comeback over Wyalusing

by Ed Weaver - December 21, 2017

A career-high 20 points from Joanne McNamara sparked a second half comeback for the North Penn-Mansfield Lady Tigers in a 55-39 win over Wyalusing on Wednesday, December 20.

After an early bucket by Wyalusing, McNamara hit an early three to give the Lady Tigers their first lead of the game. That lead soon faded as Wyalusing closed the quarter leading 13-10.

The second quarter was all Wyalusing as the Lady Rams’ defense forced Mansfield into committing numerous turnovers. On top of that, Wyalusing got Mansfield into foul trouble in the quarter. The Lady Tigers mustered only 7 points in the quarter but finally found the bottom of the net on a layup by Alaina McKee as time expired.

The 16-9 run by Wyalusing put the Lady Rams up 29-19 at halftime.

The second half was when the Lady Tigers took over, however. As the quarter started, McNamra drained a three then two possessions later went coast-to-coast for a layup to cut the lead to five. A Shaelyn Berguson layup cut the lead the three before McNamara took back the lead with just over four minutes left to play. The Lady Tigers went on to outscore the Lady Rams 19-3 in the quarter to hold a 38-32.

North Penn-Mansfield controlled the game over the final eight minutes, thanks to 9 points from Jaime Palmer, and outscored Wyalusing 17-7 to come up with the win.

McNamara led all scorers with 20 points, Palmer finished with 12, Berguson chipped in with 7, and Alyssa Smith chipped in the with off the bench.

Callie Bennett led Wyalusing with 15 points.

The win erases a 3-game losing streak for North Penn-Mansfield and pulls them to 2-3 (1-2 NTL Small School Division), a game back of .500. The team will be back in action at home against Canton on Friday night.
