Local Students Compete at Wildlife National
Two young ladies from Tioga County, Hilary Fernandes and Ella Miller, competed at the Wildlife National Competition in Eatonton, Georgia.
The WHEP, wildlife habitat education program, is a youth natural resource program designed to teach 4-H and FFA members about wildlife and fish habitat. It is a hands-on educational program, open to youth ages 8-19 however, to compete at the national level they must be 14.
To qualify to compete at the national level, the girls had to compete at the state level. The state competition was held in April in Rock Springs. The top four competitors at the state level qualified to go on to the national level as the Pennsylvania team. A team must have at least 3 people. So, this year the girls had to compete as individuals.

Behind the Sparkle: Citrine
Citrine is yellow to reddish/orange variety of quartz. Traces elements of iron in the gems structure are responsible for its color. Citrine is actually quite rare in nature, with most of the world’s supply being heat-treated purple quartz, also known as Amethyst. It is even more rare when the gem shows both colors in one crystal, which are appropriately named “ametrine.”
In the days before modern gemology, citrine was often confused with yellow topaz, the alternate birthstone for November.

Happy Thanksgiving!
In 1621, the Pilgrims and Puritans celebrated the first Thanksgiving. They had immigrated from England and for three days they had a feast filled with celebration and “thanksgivings”, or prayers to God for the blessings that He had given them. Almost 400 years later, we are still celebrating this wonderful holiday; and taking a day to remember the things that we have been blessed with and are so thankful for.

Creating a Culture of Thankfulness
This Thanksgiving season, the Home Page Staff would like to encourage all of our viewers to take time to think about what you are thankful for. With all of the craziness in life, we can take what we have for granted so often. It’s so important to remember the incredible things that we have been blessed with – even though it may be hard to see them at times.
