Making the Cut – Joey Doganiero

by Drew Patrick - September 2, 2015

Over 500,000 male high school students play basketball in the United States. Only 3.4% of those students play at the collegiate level. Not everyone follows the traditional route to play in the NCAA. Most participants are actually “walk-on’s”. A “Walk-On” is an athlete who becomes part of a team without being actively recruited beforehand or awarded an athletic scholarship. NCAA Division II and III, NAIA schools and Junior colleges all welcome walk-ons. Walking-on can be thought of in two ways: you are recruited to the team, but the coach doesn’t have a scholarship for you (which is referred to as a “preferred walk-on) – or you try out for the team after you’ve enrolled at the university or college.

Joey Doganerio is the latter of the two walk-ons. Doganerio is a 2014 graduate of Wellsboro High School who is currently attending the University of New Haven in Connecticut. Doganerio went through a series of tryouts before making the final spot on the team. Those close to him know that he is an incredibly hard-working young man who is constantly practicing and improving.

Doganerio enters the 2015-16 season hoping to see more action in his sophomore campaign. New Haven’s season starts in late October as they scrimmage against UConn.
