Lady Tigers rally to top Towanda, 52-46

by Ed Weaver - December 21, 2018

North Penn-Mansfield outscored Towanda 13-6 in the fourth quarter after trailing 40-39 to beat the Lady Knights 52-46 on Thursday, December 20.

Towanda jumped out to a 14-10 lead after the opening quarter behind six points each from Cearra McLinko and Porschia Bennett. Mansfield then rallied as Jeanette Montefusco hit a pair of three’s herself with McNamara adding 9 points. The Lady Tigers outscored Towanda 16-11 in the quarter to take a one-point, 26-25, lead at halftime.

Both teams battled back-and-forth in the third. After an early Tiger bucket McLinko hit another three to tie the game at 28-28, but the Tigers’ Lizzi Welch hit a pair of three’s to keep the Tigers in the game. Towanda’s Hannah Chandler added six points in the quarter to help retake the lead at the end, 40-39.

The fourth quarter, however, was all North Penn-Mansfield. The Tiger defense held the Black Knights to just two field goals, and six total points, as they outscored them 13-6 in the closing quarter. Hannah Bowens scored on a layup and an assist from Welch, Jaime Palmer added a bucket, and McNamara broke loose for 8 points to cap the win.

McNamara finished with a game-high 21 points, Montefusco scored 9, Welch finished with 8, Bowens added 5, Palmer scored 4, and Riley David round out the scoring with a point.

Bowens grabbed 6 rebounds and Welch chipped in 5 boards, 5 steals, and 3 assists. McNamara added 3 steals and 3 assists, and Emma Palmer had 4 rebounds.

McLinko led Towanda with 13 points, Bennett was also in double-figures with 10 points, and Chandler finished with 8.

The win improves the Lady Tigers’ record to 4-1 overall (2-1 in the NTL Small School Division). The girls are back in action for their Christmas Tournament on December 28 against Montgomery.
