Lady Tigers eek out rival win over Lady Mounties

Big third quarter pushes Lady Tigers to victory

by Ed Weaver – January 4, 2018

A 19-2 third quarter performance by the visiting North Penn-Mansfield Lady Tigers propelled them to a 46-41 victory over rival North Penn-Liberty on Wednesday, January 3.

The first half it was all Liberty as the Lady Mounties outscored Mansfield 16-9 in the first quarter and 14-11 in the second.

After trailing early Mansfield started chipping away at Liberty’s lead, slowly but surely, towards the end of the first half. With the Lady Mounties leading 30-17 with time running out, Mansfield’s Alyssa Smith hit a buzzer-beater to cut Liberty’s lead to 30-20 at halftime.

That’s when the tables turned for Mansfield. Over the next eight minutes the Lady Tigers went on a 19-2 run and turned a 10-point deficit into a 7-point, 39-32 lead after the end of the third quarter.

“Down 10 points at halftime I told the girls we had to clean up a few things,” said Tigers head coach Nate McNamara. “They were killing us on the inside and I challenged our bigs to step up and play and they did in the second half.”

The Mounties wouldn’t go down without a fight as they outscored Mansfield 9-7 in the final frame. Liberty battled back to trail by 4 late in the quarter but were unable to cut it down further. Liberty was forced to foul to extend the game as Mansfield went into their stall offense and would send them to the foul line. The Lady Tigers were only 1-for-6 from the line in the fourth, but the one shot, made by Joanne McNamara, was enough for Mansfield to hang on for the win.

“I felt like we needed to get out and run a little bit to wear them down which I thought we did,” continued McNamara. “We built a double-digit lead and gave up some late buckets but we played a good second half.”

Taylor Thompson led Liberty with 12 points, Eva Rice had 10, Emma Williams scored 9, and Alyssa Remley added 8.

Lizzi Welch led Mansfield with a double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. McNamara finished with 10, Jaime Palmer scored 6, and Jeanette Montefusco and Alyssa Smith added 5 points each.

The win improves the the Tigers record to 4-5 (2-3 NTL Small School Division), while Liberty falls to 1-6 (1-4 NTL Small School Division). Mansfield hosts Cowanesque Valley on Friday while Liberty hosts Meadowbrook Christian this evening.
