by Ed Weaver - October 21, 2016

The Wellsboro Girls Soccer teams capped the 2016 season with wins over North Penn-Mansfield on Thursday, October 20 at Mansfield University.

The Varsity team won 7-1 and the JV team won 2-0.

In the Varsity game, the Lady Hornets jumped out to an early lead just over two minutes into the game as senior Kelsey Logan scored on an assist from sophomore Emma Poirier to make it 1-0. Logan finished with a hat trick on the night, and 24 goals for her career, in the final game of her career in Green and White.

The Lady Hornets increased their lead to 2-0 with 31:47 remaining in the first half on a goal by Poirier with an assist from sophomore Julia Smith. Logan scored her second goal to make it 3-0 with 17:31 remaining then assisted Poirier on her second goal to push the score to 4-0 Lady Hornets with 8:53 left in the first.

After halftime and leading 4-0, sophomore Dahlia Hosey scored with 37:46 on the clock to make it 5-0 and Logan topped off the hat trick with 32:54 remaining. North Penn-Mansfield’s Elizabeth Vogel scored with Megan Derstine assisting with 20:32 to make the score 6-1 before sophomore Julia Smith scored off a Poirier assist for the Lady Hornets’ seventh and final goal.

Wellsboro took 21 shots on the night and had 10 corner kicks while North Penn-Mansfield took 6 shots on goal and had 5 corners. Junior Kailee Clymer made 5 saves in goal and North Penn-Mansfield’s Alaina McKee made 16 saves.

“What a way to finish the season. I’m proud of the girls,” said head coach TJ Freeman. “We had a lot of injuries and a lot of things that held us back this season. The pressure was off tonight, they had fun, and it was just a great game.”

The win improves the Lady Hornets’ record to 6-11-1 (6-7-1) to end the season.
