Lady Hornets finish perfect NTL season

by Ed Weaver - February 13, 2018

The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball team capped a perfect NTL Large School Division season with a 66-33 win over North Penn-Mansfield on Monday, February 12.

The Lady Hornets jumped out to a 14-9 lead after the first quarter then turned on the juice as they outscored Mansfield 16-8 in the second to take a 30-17 lead into halftime. Wellsboro then outscored the Lady Tigers 35-15 over the final 16 minutes for their 20th win of the season, a new record for Wellsboro head coach John Davis.

It was also Davis’ 75th win of his career.

“It’s a good feeling to come through the NTL and take care of business and beat all the NTL teams,” Davis said. “Tonight we beat a good Mansfield team who has been playing very well lately. It was a good, solid win tonight.”

Senior Lizzie Poirier led the Lady Hornets with a game-high 24 points to move to 939 for her career. Senior Tory Self backed Poirier up with 22 points to reach 462 for the season. Self is now a point away from Carrie Gorda’s 1992 total of 463 points for fifth most in Wellsboro Girls Basketball history.

Sophomore Cathryn Brought added 10 points, sophomore Liza Manning scored 6, senior Rachael Tuttle had 3, and senior Mikel Shabloski pitched in with a point.

Self finished with a double-double with 12 steals and had 8 assists, Manning had 8 rebounds, 4 steals, and a blocked shot, Tuttle grabbed 4 rebounds in her second game back from injury, Shabloski had 4 rebounds and 4 steals, and Poirier added 5 rebounds and 3 steals.

For North Penn-Mansfield, Jeanette Montefusco led the way with 10 points, Joanne McNamara had 8, Shaelyn Berguson had 7, and Jaime Palmer finished with 4. Palmer also added 10 rebounds in the loss.

“It was a good game for us because Wellsboro is a fantastic basketball team,” said Tigers head coach Nate McNamara. “I take my hat off to them. It was good for us to prepare and I explained to the girls that this is what Districts is going to look like, physical play, good basketball into next week.”

Wellsboro closed out the JV season with a 33-14 win over North Penn-Mansfield to finish 4-17 overall. Sophomore Georgia Macensky led the Lady Hornets with 11 points.

The win improves the Lady Hornets’ record to 20-2 (16-0 NTL Large School Division). The team will be back in action on Thursday, February 15 in the NTL Showdown semi-finals at home against Northeast Bradford.

North Penn-Mansfield finishes the regular season at 9-13 (7-9 NTL Small School Division). The team will await their seed for next week’s District IV Class AA playoffs.
