Lady Hornets fall to Coudy on Senior Night

by Ed Weaver - October 27, 2016

The Wellsboro Varsity Volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to Coudersport on Senior Night on Wednesday, October 26.

Coudersport picked up the non-league sweep by winning 25-20, 25-22, and 25-16. The loss drops the Lady Hornets’ record to 12-9 on the year.

Senior Kirsten Florio had 13 kills, senior Morgan Florio had 7 kills, and junior Jillian Graver had 6 kills. Junior Brianne Keane led the team with 23 assists, Morgan Florio also pitched in 12 digs and 5 points, junior Sydney Tremper had 10 digs, and junior Cheyenne Sherman scored 4 points and had 3 blocks.

In the JV match, the young Lady Hornets won 2-0 (25-21, 25-19) to finish the season undefeated under coach Michelle McNett.

“It took a lot of hard work at practices, communication, dedication by all the girls. It was great,” McNett said after her 77th career win.

Next up for the Lady Hornets are the District IV playoffs, something head coach Sharon Zuchowski is excited about.

“We’re really excited to go into districts because we have gone up against every team this year and we have either beat them or been very competitive. We feel like its really a toss-up of who will win this district.”

Unlike last season when they were at the top of their bracket, the defending District IV AA champion Lady Hornets will have to work their way through this year’s bracket.

“We like our position going in,” Zuchowski continued. “We think that because we lost to some of these teams this year that they are going to underestimate us and think that they have an easy win. We’ve got things to show them.”

The District IV AA playoffs will take place on Saturday, October 29 at Williamson High School at a time to be determined.
