JV Lady Hornets & Varsity Tigers Win!

by Ed Weaver - January 14, 2015

The Wellsboro Varsity Girls Basketball gave up 20 first quarter and 25 third quarter points as the Lady Tigers defeated the Lady Hornets, 54-36.

After a 4-4 tie early in the first quarter, the Lady Hornets quickly fell behind due to strong outside shooting of the Lady Tigers. Wellsboro would battle back in the second quarter as they held Mansfield to only five points. Junior Alexa Singer scored three of the seven points in the quarter and Junior Sarah Ingerick scored four of her team-leading 12 points to trail 25-17 at halftime.

Despite scoring first in the second half, the Lady Hornets’ shooting went cold as they missed shot after shot, giving Mansfield numerous scoring opportunities. Mansfield would capitalize and in turn catch fire from behind the three-point line to put the game out of reach.

Rounding out the scoring for Wellsboro was Freshman Rachael Tuttle and Sophomore Janessa Davis six points each, Senior Jordan Butters and Junior Raisa Rogers with two points, and Sophomore Jessica Grab with one point.

Tuttle grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, Grab and Singer each had two steals, and Senior Peyton Wilson had three assists.

In the JV game, the Lady Hornets won a thrilling double overtime victory by the final of 49-43. Freshman Lizzie Poirier scored 19 points on the night before fouling out and Grab pitched in 10 as the JV team improved their record to 6-2.

With the loss, the Lady Hornets fall to 6-5 (2-2 NTL Division 1). The team will be back in action on Thursday, January 15 as they host Williamson.
