Movin’ Together – It’s A Stretch!

by Amiee Jones - September 29, 2017

The benefits of stretching are numerous. Warming up with stretching before we exercise drastically changes the effect that the movements have on our muscles. Stretching improves range of motion, enhances flexibility, and increases blood flow to the muscles. All of these benefits improve exercise performance, as well as overall health.

In this edition of Movin’ Together, Health and Wellness Educator Sharon Belvin shares some of the reasons that stretching is so important. First and foremost, stretching helps prevent injury. Navigating life can include accidents and mishaps. This is a reality at any age, and increasing flexibility through stretching can help avoid potential injuries.

In addition to the importance of stretching, having the correct type of shoes makes a notable difference in your fitness results and health. Nancy Brooks, owner of In My Shoes, explains that the many fitness shoe options serve a very important purpose. Each variation is tailored to a specific sport or exercise to give the appropriate cushion, mobility, and support. When choosing the correct sneaker, it makes all the difference to try on the shoe before purchasing. In addition to picking an activity appropriate shoe, there are fitting needs to take in to consideration. Width and pronation tendencies are the main details to pay attention to in a shoe fitting. Pronation needs refer to the athlete’s ankle rotation tendencies. Depending on the arch and shape of your foot, you may tend to roll on the inner or outer edge of the sole. Nancy also spoke to the importance of choosing a shoe with an adequate sole for your chosen exercise. The terrain being covered will dictate the necessary durability and tread.

Between the pertinent information about shoe choices and the essential reminder to keep up with stretching, this Movin’ Together segment is full of relevant information! By implementing these lessons we will be avoiding injuries and maximizing fitness efforts! Our bodies will thank us for paying attention to these important details. So, next time you lace up your sneakers, enjoy a thorough stretch to make the most of your overall health.
