HPN NEWS – Weekend Magazine

by Home Page Staff - December 1, 2017

The big story for this week is Christmas and what people in our region are doing to celebrate. The 34th annual Dickens of a Christmas takes place this weekend in Wellsboro. It all begins a 9:00 AM sharp as the town crier rings the opening bell and announces the day’s agenda. Thousands of people come to Wellsboro each year to be a part of this festive occasion – many dressed in Victorian clothing and ready for a memorable time in small-town America.

The outdoor marketplace along with Wellsboro’s leading stores and restaurants makes Dickens of a Christmas the place to do all your Christmas shopping while enjoying great music and live performances. HPN News found Wellsboro stores brimming over with Christmas gift ideas for everyone on your list. You can shop all day while enjoying homemade soups and chowders, bread pudding, chili, fresh baked cookies and cupcakes, Popcorn, hot roast beef sandwiches, crab cakes, pretzels and more. And of course, Wellsboro’s restaurant menus offer delicious full course dining.

Local churches will host a variety of indoor events Friday and Saturday, Dec. 1st and 2nd. Among them are a Dickens of a Dinner, lunches, concerts, a display of model trains, a cookie sale and in the spirit of helping others, an Alternative Christmas Fair with entertainment and refreshments.

Hamilton-Gibson will present A Dickens of a Concert Friday night and six performances of “A Christmas Carol” at the Deane Center’s two theatres on Saturday and one performance on Sunday. The Arcadia Theatre is showing the film “A Miracle on 34th Street” all three days.

Hamilton-Gibson Productions is one of the main reasons why ‘Dickens of a Christmas’ is so unique and special. From the plays and musicals to the skits and sing-a-longs – we all owe Hamilton-Gibson a huge “thank you” for what they do for our community, and the Dickens of a Christmas weekend.

Hamilton-Gibson is providing so many things that the whole family can enjoy! A brand new group they have is a juggling troop. They opened it to anyone who wanted to juggle on the streets; and even though it’s still in the early stages, they’re all having great fun. They have concerts with the children and youth choirs; they celebrate on the street with all the Fezziwigs, they have marvelous strolls through Main Street!

Earlier this week Thomas Putnam sat down with Home Page cameras and explained just what a Fezziwig is. Please watch this edition of Weekend Magazine for the inside scoop.

Then at 5 p.m. Saturday, the Candlelight Walk for Peace will begin at Packer Park on Queen Street followed by the annual lighting of the Christmas tree ceremony with Santa including a Carol sing on The Green.

Mansfield kicked off their Christmas season this past Saturday with “Home for the Holidays!” This event, sponsored by the Mansfield Chamber of Commerce, brought people together to spend quality time with one another while supporting local businesses during Small Business Saturday. The festivities began at Smythe Park with the 5k run/walk and continued throughout the day which featured vendors, a brunch with Santa, a pet parade, food booths, a tree lighting ceremony, holiday trivia, live music, and free giveaways. The festive atmosphere gave attendees the chance to meet new people, shop local for their Christmas gifts, and spend quality time with their community.

After making his grand entrance on a fire truck, Santa posed with children for free photos taken by Bruce Dart. The first 100 children received free stockings donated by the Mansfield VFW. Santa said that his favorite part of the event was spending time with the children by reading books to them, posing for pictures, and enjoying a delicious brunch held at Saint James Episcopal Church.

But, this is just the beginning of our local Christmas celebrations – there’s much more. And on this edition of Weekend Magazine, we find out about The Dickens of a Christmas Best Dressed Contest with the opportunity to win thousands of dollars in prizes and gifts. And we have all the details on the next Big Event, Christmas on Main Street running December 8th through the 10th.

Last years Dickens of a Christmas Best Dressed contest winner was a high school student. Sky DeBockler had been attending Dickens Festivals since she was a young girl, but it wasn’t until last year when she decided to create her Victorian masterpiece. Sky wanted it to have brilliant colors with an elegance slant. Sky also wanted her outfit to be a design that people would enjoy seeing and inspire others to create something special for themselves. Dickens is always more fun and exciting when you come dressed for the occasion in time-period clothing.

Sky won over $1,000.00 worth of cash and prizes from Wellsboro’s local merchants which included a beautiful custom-made hat from Christine A. Moore Millinery of New York City. We hope you will come decked out in your Victorian dress this year and don’t forget to register for the best-dressed contest. Registration is open from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM inside the Deane Center for the Performing Arts in Wellsboro.

But there’s more as the celebration of Christmas and the spirit of giving to others continues. The next big event is Wellsboro’s family-friendly Christmas Weekend. CHRISTMAS ON MAIN STREET begins December 8th with more fun, shopping, and fantastic food. During this broadcast, John Vogt talks with the co-creator of Christmas on Main Street to find out more.

There’s a new Mayor in Town. Mayor-Elect Mike Detweiler will be instated as the new Mayor of Mansfield, Pennsylvania in January. Home Page correspondent Stacey Dondey sat down for a visit with Mike to get a better idea of his vision for the Mansfield community.

Ed Weaver looks back at some of the big sports moments in 2016, and area basketball and wrestling coaches look forward to this years season. Don’t miss Home Page Sports with Ed Weaver on this edition of Weekend Magazine.

Weekend Magazine is a produced by HPN News in association with Circle W Sports. Have a fantastic Dickens a Christmas weekend.
